Professor Helen Ball, Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre, Conference 2020

Professor Helen Ball is Head of Anthropology at Durham University in the UK. She has been researching infant sleep for the past 20 years, concentrating on the sleep ecology of infants, young children and their parents. She has conducted research in hospitals and the community, and contributes to national and international policy and practice guidelines on infant care. Last year Professor Ball received an award for Outstanding Impact in Society for her research from the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council.

Sarah Buckley is a New-Zealand-trained GP/family physician with qualifications in GP-obstetrics and family planning. She is the mother of four home-born children, and currently combines motherhood with her work as a writer on pregnancy, birth, and parenting.

She is also a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland, where her research is focused on oxytocin and the autonomic nervous system in labour and birth, and the impacts of interventions.

Jillian has been a Speech Pathologist since 2002, after graduating from The University of Queensland. She is the Principal Speech Pathologist and Director at Feeding & Speech Therapy, a private Speech Pathology practice on the Gold Coast.  She currently works with children with delayed and/or disordered communication and feeding skills, including children with disabilities. Jillian has previous experience in the hospital setting, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Dr Pamela Douglas MBBS FRACGP IBCLC PhD is a GP and Medical Director of Possums Education. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Maternity Newborn and Families Research Group at Griffith University, Senior Lecturer with the Discipline of General Practice at The University of Queensland, and author of The discontented little baby book: all you need to know about feeds, sleep and crying.

Donna Geddes DMU, PostGrad Dip (Sci), PhD is a Research Professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Western Australia. Professor Geddes is internationally renowned for her novel work with ultrasound imaging that has revolutionized our understanding of the anatomy of the lactating breast, milk ejection and blood flow, as well as the infant’s sucking technique, suck-swallow-breathe co-ordination, gastric emptying and body composition of both the term and preterm infant.

Carly Grubb, is the Managing Director of a new  Australian charity called Little Sparklers which has been founded to further the work of of The Beyond Sleep Training Project, which Carly began back in 2017. The project is built around an online peer support group that focuses on providing the education, support, solidarity, kindness and compassion so desperately needed by parents in this world. Using social media, Carly developed a space to connect parents and ignite a movement that gains momentum by the day.

Dr Sophie Havighurst is a child clinical psychologist who has clinical, research, and teaching experience in the field of early intervention with children at risk for antisocial development. She is a Senior Lecturer at Mindful – Centre for Training and Research in Development Health, Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne, where she teaches and provides supervision to child and adolescent mental health practitioners. She works as a clinical psychologist at the Children’s Court Clinic and in private practice.

Renee Kam qualified with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from The University of Melbourne in 2000. In 2010 she obtained a Certificate IV in Breastfeeding Management. In 2011, her book, The Newborn Baby Manual was published. She has been an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 2012 mainly working in private practice. Renee is currently undertaking a higher degree in research to investigate low milk supply.

Renee Keogh RN (NICU), IBCLC is a registered nurse and Lactation Consultant with 15 years experience working in Neonatal Intensive care units in Sydney, Canberra and Darwin. She completed her Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Nursing in 2004, and qualified as International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2010. She has been an integral part of the team at The Possums Clinic since 2015, and is currently Director of Breastfeeding Support at The Possums Clinic, Brisbane.

Dr Nikki Mills, ENT Specialist, Starship Children's Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand, Conference 2020

Nikki is a Paediatric ENT Consultant at Starship Children’s Hospital with a special interest in paediatric airway and swallowing disorders. Nikki leads a Multidisciplinary Dysphagia clinic at Starship. She has longstanding links with the Anatomy Department at University of Auckland School of Medicine and has almost completed her Doctorate in “The Functional Anatomy of Sucking and Swallowing in Breastfeeding Babies”.

Dr Sharon Perella is an experienced neonatal intensive care nurse and IBCLC with qualifications in paediatric nursing, midwifery,  and child and adolescent health nursing. Sharon's passion is to contribute to the growing body of evidence around human lactation, particularly in the areas of preterm infant feeding, low milk supply and sucking anomalies, to facilitate evidence based care of the breastfeeding dyad.

Professor Laurence Walsh

Professor Laurence Walsh AO is a registered specialist in special needs dentistry and is Professor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland. He has been undertaking oral surgical procedures (including frenal surgery in infants and young children) with different lasers, and training clinicians in laser surgery for over 25 years. He is a founding member of the Australian Collaboration for Infant Oral Research.

PhD BSc (Hons) RN RM Neonatal Nurse (ENB 405) Special and Intensive Care of the Newborn

Jeanine Young is a Professor of Nursing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Jeanine has a special interest in infant care practices, breastfeeding and promotion of Safe Sleeping recommendations for infants. Jeanine works closely with Red Nose to ensure recommendations relating to infant sleeping are evidence based and practical for families to implement. She is a member of the Queensland Paediatric Quality Council and Queensland Child Death Review Panel reviewing infant and child deaths in order to inform future prevention initiatives.
