Response to question about childcare in SA

Honorary Associate Professor Peter Hill, Public Health Physician

Kate from South Australia is wondering when she should withdraw her four year old from Kindy, given that SA Health is currently investigating a possible case of community transmission.

I wish I could answer with absolute certainty: what I can say is that SA Health has been quite conservative in its approach, and the State is concerned to maintain its relative advantage. If your Kindy is at risk, they will act rapidly. It’s likely to be a parent testing positive—so two degrees of contact from your child. SA Health will certainly close Kindies if they perceive risk is significant. But the pattern at the moment is that parental concern is moving ahead of public health risk calculations, and pressuring closures. Only you can balance your instinct to protect, against the advantages of having your son in a stimulating environment that allows you to manage a new addition to the family. Whichever choice you make will be the right one in this situation, for now.
