Neuroprotective Developmental Care in the Community

Our charity, Possums Education, provides upskilling opportunities for health professionals who work in early life care. To date, about 1000 health professionals both in Australia and overseas have participated in our conferences and certification days.

Community-based Neuroprotective Developmental Care in the Community (NDC), also known as 'the Possums programs', aims to protect the rapidly developing infant brain and gut during the critical first 12 months of life, and also supports parents' mental health and psychological resilience during this vulnerable perinatal period.

Unlike other approaches to early life care, NDC uniquely acknowledges the interrelatedness of breastfeeding and infant feeding, sleep, cry-fuss behaviours, and parental mood, offering innovative, state-of-the-art clinical tools to apply in each domain. This uniquely holistic approach is built upon peer-reviewed and published theoretical foundations, developed from 15 years of interdisciplinary research collaborations. By consulting with NDC-trained health professionals, parents avoid fragmentation of care and conflicting advice.

"Possums Education" is the trading name of our non-profit organisation and registered charity, Possums for Mothers and Babies Ltd (ACN 162 221 892).
